Economy of the royal city
That was its “official” origin, explains Francisco Ruiz Gómez, professor of Medieval History at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM). “The Carta Puebla (Town Charter) was granted. It is considered as the founding document of the city of which a copy is preserved in the Municipal Archives.”
“Then there were many royal villas and that petition changed the name and allowed to distinguish Ciudad Real from the rest”. In fact, the town of Villarreal (Castellón), for example, still preserves it.
The professor explains the context in which the change took place. It is necessary to go back to the time of the Trastámara dynasty that began with Enrique II, illegitimate son of Alfonso XI. “There was a civil war and Henry II killed Pedro I in Montiel, establishing a new dynasty that always had problems of legitimacy, having usurped power by force”.
At the end of the 14th century, in 1385, the Trastámara were on the verge of disappearing after the battle of Aljubarrota, in the war with Portugal, a place where those who supported the legitimate heirs of Pedro I ‘The Cruel’ or ‘The Just’, depending on supporters or detractors, had taken refuge.

The origin of Ciudad Real is closely linked to the vicissitudes of the ancient settlement of Alarcos. Attempts at repopulation between the 12th and 13th centuries by the Christian monarchs in this place were unsuccessful. That is why Alfonso X decided to found a city in a new location, 9 km from Alarcos, in the village known as Pozuelo Seco de Don Gil. This took place in 1255. By means of a town charter the king granted settlement privileges, defined the layout of the city and ordered the construction of a wall surrounding it with 130 towers and 7 gates. It was given the name of Villa Real.
The territory in which the city was founded was the heart of the domains of the military order of Calatrava. Alfonso X wanted to counteract the enormous influence of this military order, protagonist of the wars of the reconquest, by creating a royal town, subject to its authority.
In the struggle with the Order of Calatrava, which was constant since its foundation, the granting of the title of city by John II in 1420 was especially important, in recognition of his support for the king against the military orders. From this moment on, the city was renamed Ciudad Real.
Where Ciudad Real is located in Spain
The temple that at the present time can be visited had its origin in a primitive hermitage built between the XIII and XIV centuries and of which today only a door and a rose window at the foot of the cathedral building, the door of the pardon, are conserved. In addition to this access, the temple has two other entrances: the door of the shade to the north and the door of the noon to the south, both decorated in a very simple way.
In the interior there is a single nave of impressive dimensions covered by different vaults of increasingly complex tracery that tell us about the constructive evolution of the building. In addition, the interior also houses the key piece of the cathedral: the altarpiece of the High Altar. In Giraldo de Merlo’s masterpiece, which was begun in 1612 and finished in 1617, different scenes from the life of the Virgin are fundamentally represented, since it is a work dedicated to the patron saint of Ciudad Real, the Virgen del Prado.
